The history of the Bauhaus icon in Lugano

1946 - The origin: A pharmaceutical project in Switzerland

Vittore La Fleur, owner of a Milan-based pharmaceutical company, founded a production site in Switzerland.
He acquired a plot of land measuring over 2,000 m² on Via Cassarinetta in Lugano – at the upper edge of a quiet residential area between the road and the railroad line. Two undeveloped plots provided the ideal setting for a factory with international aspirations.

1949-1950 - Construction phase: Rationalism with clarity
The building was constructed in 1950. It comprised laboratories, offices, garages and a director’s apartment with a roof garden.
The architecture followed a clear, rationalist structure – with exposed concrete columns, brickwork and ribbon windows. It combined functionality with modern standards.
1950s-2000s - A place for precision engineering: The time with Audemars

For decades, the Audemars family used the building for the R. Audemars Fils watchmaking and gemstone factory.

The finest metal parts for watch production and other mechanical precision components were manufactured here.

The Audemars family played a key role in shaping the building: their craftsmanship and attention to detail defined the character of its use for decades.

2020 - handover and new impetus
The building was taken over by the Audemars family – with the assurance that they would be allowed to carry on the name and thus the legacy. A quiet generational change that paves the way for a new future.
2021 - Planning the vision

Preparations for the comprehensive renovation began: Inspection of the original substance, careful planning, and coordination with monument protection and local tradesmen.
The aim was to preserve the building’s substance and at the same time bring it into the present in a visionary, technical and creative way.

2021-2024 - Refurbishment with respect for the original
Within three years, the listed building was extensively renovated, modernized and reconstructed.
Historic colors, materials and structures were returned, windows and shutters were restored by hand and old fittings and mountings were repaired.
The original Belgian bluestone from 1948 was reused in the bathrooms in the same size, shape and quality. The Ticino garden with its old plants and bowling green was also reconstructed.
The high-quality oak parquet floors were refinished, waxed and brushed to match the historical model.
2025 - A new place for ideas and quality of life
Once the refurbishment is complete, the first letting begins. The former factory now offers flexible spaces for rent – for living, working or creative projects.
The historical character remains tangible, but is complemented by modern technology, a sustainable concept and stylish furnishings.
